Float tubing is becoming more and more popular with people from all walks of life. You can take group tours, gently floating along a lazy river one summer afternoon, or if you’re more of a thrill-seeker, you can coast down faster channels of water. River float tubes are even popular with fishers, helping them get the places they otherwise couldn’t. However, whatever reason you have to float, it’s important to make safety your number one priority. Here are some tips for staying safe while float tubing.
All Participants Should Wear a PFD
When using river float tubes, make sure that everyone is wearing a personal flotation device, or PFD. Your PFD will help keep you afloat should you fall out of your tube. The PFD that you use should be approved by the Coast Guard for use in watersports. Standard, non-inflatable PFDs are preferable, especially for children because they are inherently buoyant.
Use an Appropriate Tube
Your river float tubes should be approved for the activity and speeds you have in mind. Most tubes are designed for children over the age of 6, for example, and will have limits on the number of riders and maximum combined weight of the passengers.
If you’re towing your river float tubes behind your boat, always ensure you have a spotter on the boat, keeping an eye on the tubers at all times. Keep your speed below 10 mph if the riders are under 12 years. Don’t attempt any tricks or excessive speeds unless the tubers are trained and experienced in this.
Choose the Right Location
Make sure the area you plan to go to is designated as safe for river float tubes. Keep a safe distance from buoys, rocks, boaters and other potential hazards. Consult the Coast Guard or a local water sports specialist for more information about suitable locations.
